Year at a Glance     (What will we learn in Dyslexia Reading Intervention?)

The Alphabet

To gain an understanding of all aspects of the alphabet.

Distinguishing between consonants and vowels.

To know the difference between the names and the sounds.

To be able to say the alphabet for a-z.

To be able to fluently say the sounds of the consonants.

To be able to know the difference between the long and the short vowel sounds and understand the semi vowel properties of y.

To be able to spell all the alphabet sounds.

To be able to read CVC (consonant. vowel. consonant. )  words and be able to pick out initial, medial and final sounds.

To be able to spell CVC words.

To be able to read CVC structured sentences.

To be able to spell CVC structured sentences when given as dictations.

Consonant Blends

Using the flashcards the aim is to be able to read and spell all the consonant blends.

When the cards are fluent the next stage is to give words that are composed of consonant blends and to be able to analyze them, read them and spell them.

When words can be read and spelled then consonant blend structured sentences are given and again the aim here is to be able to read and spell these with ease and confidence. 

At every stage the meanings of the words are also discussed to build up a gradually increasing working vocabulary.

Long Vowels

Using the flashcards, the aim is to be able to read and spell all the long vowels.

When the cards are fluent the next stage is to give words that are composed of long vowels and to be able to analyze them, read them and spell them. Due to intricacies of this particular section other strategies are brought in, some of which involve the initial word mnemonic chants.

When words can be read and spelled, then long vowel structured sentences are given and again the aim here is to be able to read and spell these with ease and confidence. 

At every stage the meanings of the words are also discussed to build up a gradually increasing working vocabulary.

Prefixes

Using the flashcards, the aim is to be able to read and spell all the prefixes.

When the cards are fluent the next stage is to give words that are composed of prefixes and to be able to analyze them, read them and spell them.

When words can be read and spelled then the prefix structured sentences are given and again the aim here is to be able to read and spell these with ease and confidence. 

At every stage the meanings of the words are also discussed to build up a gradually increasing working vocabulary.

Suffixes and Word Endings

Using the flashcards, the aim is to be able to read and spell all the suffixes and word endings.

When the cards are fluent the next stage is to give words that are composed of suffixes and word endings and to be able to analyze them, read them and spell them.

When words can be read and spelled then consonant suffix and word ending structured sentences are given and again the aim here is to be able to read and spell these with ease and confidence. 

At every stage the meanings of the words are also discussed to build up a gradually increasing working vocabulary.

Handwriting

This is a whole series of guided exercises to teach cursive writing. This can be brought in at any stage of the syllabus depending upon the specific needs of the individual pupil.
