About Us

Brazos Elementary School is located at 9810 Kibler in Orchard, Texas.  There are 400 students on the campus.  Its warm, friendly, family-oriented atmosphere is supported by parental and community involvement.

Brazos Elementary is proud of its low student/teacher ratio, the school nurse and her new facilities, the librarian and the beautiful new library, and our counselor.  There are also teachers for art, music, physical education, speech, technology, and special education .

The technology program addresses all the state mandated objectives.  The students learn applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and how to use the Internet.  In addition the students work on keyboarding skills daily. Technology is integrated into the curriculum so that students successfully use it as a tool to enhance and complete assignments in all areas of instruction.  The technology is supported by two computer labs with a T-1 line connection to the Internet.  There are also computers in each room so each classroom can use Internet resources throughout the curriculum.

Brazos Elementary Students find the school's library a never-ending treasure trove of great books that excite their imaginations, challenge their reading skills, and open up new worlds of places to explore across the globe.  All students attend story time in the Library's Kiva once a week, where they listen to stories that compliment the lessons being learned in the classroom.  Students may choose to participate in the Accelerated Reading program, earning points, medals, and other rewards throughout the school year.  Brazos Elementary participates in the Texas Library Association's Bluebonnet Reading Program.  To be eligible to vote for their favorite Bluebonnet book, students in the third and fourth grades must read, or have read to them, at least five of the books that have been nominated for the list by teachers and librarians around the State.  The election takes place in January, when students at participating schools place their votes for their favorite book, making the Bluebonnet Award an honor given by the students of the State to one deserving author each year.  Brazos Elementary students also participate in the Pizza Hut Book-It Program in the fall, and the Six Flags Six-hour Reading Club in the spring.  Two book fairs are held each year - a mini-book fair during Children's Book Week in November, and a week-long Book Fair in February.  Proceeds from the Book Fairs benefit our students in various ways, from adding new books to the collection to helping to pay for guest speakers for the students.

This 2005 - 2006 School Year,  Brazos Elementary is working very hard to develop Positive Character Traits in our students. These classes are held each Friday during the student's PAW time slot.  Each grade level meets with our Counselor and spends a class period listening to stories told by the Counselor that bring out specific character traits.  This year we are working on such traits as Courage, Loyalty, Justice, Respect, Hope, Honesty Love, Responsibilities and others.  Health issues are discussed. Our students are  discussing bullying, teasing, tattling, drug and alcohol abuse.  The counselor uses stories and activities to demonstrate proper character.  After the story, the class breaks up into small groups (cell groups) for discussion on the particular character trait for that day and how it applies to each person.

And best of all, Brazos Elementary School has moved  into the new building.  We are very proud of these new facilities.
